The pineapple hat was entered by the UNESCO on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a traditional pledge of national folklore representing the identity and wit of the Panamanian artisan. Its production is the result of a thorough process that begins with the collection of vegetable fibres such as the jungle, the white cane, and the pita, materials that are prepared, whitened and dyed with natural pigments to be later plaited and knitted by hand. Each hat requires hours of dedication and an improved technical symbol throughout the rural communities, making them a symbol of living knowledge.

The decorative fringes, known as "pintas" or "talcos," do not only embellish the piece but also represent traditional patterns inspired by the nature and daily life of the Panamanian countryside. Their use transcends the aesthetic: the pintao hat forms part of the typical clothing of the peasant man and has become an icon recognized both in folk celebrations and in cultural events of national and international scope.

Due to its historic, social and cultural importance, the UNESCO's statement does not only highlight its value as a living heritage but also promotes the protection of the artisan profession, promotes national pride and promotes economic development in regions where the manufacture of the hat is a fundamental tradition, especially in the community of La Pintada, in the province of Coclé. Today, the pineao hat remains an emblem of Panamanian identity, a work of handknitted art and a cultural legacy that is preserved with dedication and passion.
