Among the most representative creations are necks, nightshirts, mantel, bags, hammocks and decorative ornaments.

In Panama, this item does not only have a useful and decorative role but also a cultural one, as textiles reflect the identity, traditions and creativity of the communities that make them.

Origin and History

The production of textiles in Panama has roots in pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures, whose peoples used natural fibres to manufacture dressings, bags and objects for daily use.

With the arrival of the colonial age, new seams, embroidery and fabric technologies have been incorporated from Europe, giving rise to traditional garments such as the Panamanian pollera.

With the passing of time, the artisan developed their own styles and colorful designs inspired by nature, customs and national folklore.

Region where it stands out the most

The provinces of Herrera and Los Santos are recognised for the production of traditional Panamanian crafts and milling furniture. In these regions, many family workshops keep alive the tradition of manufacturing handworked wood furniture.

They also highlight areas of Veraguas and Coclé, where artisan production typical furniture using natural and technical materials inherited from their ancestors.
