Fiber in General
Fibre crafts in Panama are a traditional activity that consists of production of products using natural fibres extracted from plants such as palm, seawater and other plant species. From these fibre products are created items such as hats, baskets, bags and decorative objects using technologies such as fabric and plaiting. In the Panamanian context, this item does not only play a useful role but also cultural as they reflect the identity, creativity and ancestral knowledge of communities that produce them.
IMPORTANCE
The importance of fibre crafts in Panama lies in its role in preserving cultural traditions, especially in rural and indigenous communities. Through this activity we transmit technologies and knowledge from generation to generation, strengthening the cultural identity of the country. It also represents a source of income for many families and its products are highly valued at crafts fairs and by tourism, because of their natural and handmade character.
Origin and History
The origin of fibre work in Panama goes back to the pre-Columbian age, when indigenous peoples have already used natural materials for the production of objects necessary for their daily lives, such as containers, clothing and utensils. These technologies have been refined with time and have been kept alive to date, greatly conserving their traditional processes and their relation with their natural environment.
Region where it stands out the most
In Panama, fibre crafts are important in different regions of the country where well established traditions exist. On the Azuero peninsula, especially in the province of Herrera, the pineao hat, made with vegetable fibre with a care of fabric, is famous. In indigenous communities such as the Emberá and Ngäbe- Buglé, baskets and bags are also made using natural fibres with characteristic designs that reflect their culture. These regions are recognized for keeping their production alive and for their contribution to the Panamanian cultural heritage.
