The National Directorate of Handicrafts and the Ministry of Culture are pleased to be part of the growth of our artisans.

This edition also features a different kind of fair with more than 600 artisans from all regions of the country.


A CULTURAL LEGACY

Our artisans are an example for the new generations to follow; their work and dedication keep our cultural essence alive.

The great legacy of these great pillars of Panamanian culture will live on and will be forever recognized through their art.  


ICONIC HANDICRAFTS OF PANAMA

The pintao hat, inscribed by UNESCO on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a traditional garment of national folklore, handmade with natural fibers such as reed, acorn or pita and vegetable dyes. Its origin dates back to colonial times, and since 2011 it has a law that protects and promotes its production, which represents a significant source of income for the communities that make it.

The Guna mola is a traditional textile expression of the Guna indigenous people, handmade by the technique of reverse appliqué with multiple layers of colored fabrics. Its origin dates back to pre-Columbian times, evolving from body painting to become an essential part of the Guna women's dress, and currently constitutes a source of cultural identity and economic livelihood for the communities that make it.

The pollera is the typical national costume and one of the most emblematic handicraft expressions of the country. This
dress, worn mainly by women at festivities
traditional, it is completely handmade with fabrics made from
cotton or linen, embroidery, lace, ribbons, and other details that can be
take years to develop. Mainly produced in the regions of
Azuero.
